How I Made a Benny The Butcher Type Beat with the Vinyl Treats Sample Pack

How I Made The Beat

Picking the Sample

First I picked out one of the 8 samples in the Vinyl Treats sample pack. This one was dark and grimey perfect for the beat I am about to make. I am using SliceX in FL Studio which is my favorite sampling plugin stock or otherwise. Preferably I like the chop feature in my MPC Live II better but this is great as well.

I chose to keep the pitch the same but I layed out my chops and turned up the BPM and I liked the way that sounded.

Laying Down Drums

Instead of using my own drum pack I chose Cymatics Drill Kicks and Cooking Souls drum kit for the Rim and Hi Hats. I added some bounce to the kick pattern by messing with the velocities and timing. The rim I kept on the twos and fours. For the hi hats I used my midi controller to humanize the feel by not quantizing them and using the natural velocity.

Programming Bass

I made a simple yet effective bass line by using the FL stock plugin BooBass. Seriously guys don't sleep on this plugin. If you want a low latency natural sounding bass you can do no wrong here. Just turn the bass knob all the way up and turn the mid and treble all the way down. Turned out quite grimey!

Mixing and Mastering

I have created and mixed so many beats that I know my go-to plugins, in what order, and the right settings. I have presets built for my samples, kicks, snares, parallel compression, ect.

I mix my samples using the parametric eq 2 inside of FL Studio, then I use the SSL EV2 channel compressor. Then to make the drums smack I use my own presets inside the dbx-160 compressor. For bass I filter out the hi end and duck at 100hz to let the kick shine before finishing it off with the Rbass plugin and some basic compression.

For the parallel compression I use the Puigtec EQ with the RCompressor. Then finally I come to the mastering phase.

For the master bus I use the parametric eq 2 to roll off 20hz and 20khz. Next comes the SSL Comp and the L1 limiter. I shoot to have the meter be anywhere from -12 to -8 db so that it's loud enough to be competitive but still preserves some dynamics.
