How To Make Custom Sounds in Omnisphere (tutorial)

1. Load Up Edison in FL Mixer 0:00 - 0:10

load fl studio edisonThe first step is to load up Edison in the FL mixer. We must import either sample or load up another vst/other sound source. This is great for taking a short bit of a sample (3-4 seconds) and looping it to create it’s own sound. This can lead to some interesting combinations inside of Omnisphere 2.

2. Load Piano Roll. Sample at note C5 0:17 - 0:36

load fl studio piano rollBring up piano roll in the step sequencer make sure you set sample at a middle C. That way when Omnisphere maps your sound it will correctly tune your sample.

Load up Edison. Next to the Record button there is a drop down menu, choose “Now”. Now hit Record Button. Press play on your pattern and the sound will begin recording in Edison

3. Looping Sample 0:36 - 1:18

set loop points in fl studio edisonOnce our sample has been recorded or imported lets trim some fat. Select your start and end point of your sample and press CTRL+DEL to trim the sample.

Next, click the Tune/Set Loop button from the Edison menu. You have a few different options to process your sample.

Length lets you adjust the cross fade of your sample. Tension allows a volume boost in the center of the loop points for seamless loops. I am not sure what Snap is for so leave that alone.

4. Save Sample in 24 Bit - 1:18 - 1:32

saving samples for omnisphere 2This part is important. Click the save icon and in the drop down menu choose “Save sample in 24bit file”. Omnisphere won’t take any other file than 24bit.

5. Load up Omnisphere 1:32 - 1:47

Once you save your sample you can load up Omnisphere in your step sequencer. Make sure you select “All” under Directories in the top-left corner of Omnisphere. This will be important later on when we access our custom patches.

6. Importing Sample 1:47 - 2:18

importing sounds into omnisphere 2Using the default patch, go into the “A” bank next to the “Main” screen. Omnisphere works based on two sound sources (both A and B). Any Sample or Synth sound can be accessed here.

Switch sound source from “Synth” to “Sample” and click on “Empty”. This will load up the Sound Source Browser. All Omnisphere sound sources are located here.

Click “User Audio” in top right of this screen. Next, drag in the sample you saved earlier into the “User Audio” box. This will take some time and when it imports it will show you a screen saying it has been imported.

7. Combining Sounds 2:18 - 2:52

As I mentioned before Omnisphere works on one or two sound sources coming together to create a patch.

This time we click on “B” and we can either follow the same steps as before and import and new sample or choose a Sample or Synth from Omnispheres collection.

For this tutorial I used a piano sample that I imported before doing this demonstration.

Tip: When combining sounds think of what would harmonize well together. For this tutorial a choir patch sounds great with a piano. Two piano sound sources work well together especially blended with Innerspace effect in Omnisphere FX menu.

8. Adding Effects and Adjusting ADSR and Volume 2:52 - 3:20

Let’s access the FX menu. There are 4 options here, you can choose to put your FX on Aux channel, either A or B sound sources, or Common on all channels. I usually leave mine on Common.

My bare essential FX processing requires the Modern Compressor and Pro-Verb. There are tons of other effects on here too so you can create some crazy combinations.

I also wanted to adjust some of the settings to the sound sources. I went into the Choir sound and added some release down in the ADSR settings in the bottom right of Omnisphere. I also used the A and B sliders on the bottom of Omnisphere to change the volume and blend the two sounds together.

7. Save Patch and Info 3:20 - 4:22

saving sound patches in omnisphere 2To save your custom patch go to “Utility” that’s right of the Patch Browser. Choose “Save Patch”. Create a folder where you will be storing your custom patches. Next, save patch in that folder.

A menu will then pop up asking for information. Most of this is optional but I usually put my name on it, add a keyword, URL to my website.

If you want your patch to display any text on the Main Menu when you launch your patch make sure you fill out “Notes”.

After that click save and you’re ready to use your patch. Make sure Directory is still set to “All”.

Go to folder you created and your patch will be there.

Happy Beatmaking!
