I was playing a game of chess today, taking a break from my normal routine and I got this idea that I wanted to share with you today on how to become a better rapper. This is going to have some practical tips as well as some out-of-the-box tips that may help you not only pursuing your music career but improving you as a person as a whole. I know it worked for me, so let’s get into this.
Tip #1: Learn Chess
This is the most outlandish and illogical one of them all. You might be asking yourself now “What the hell does this have to do with music and improving myself as a rapper”. Just be patient.
The reason I included this is because this game has taught me alot about life in general, as well as improving myself as a music producer.
This game helps you think tactically and strategically, helping you see how the choices you make affect your life and your career as a rapper.
Remember, we are in the music business and this music industry is one of the most cutthroat and ruthless of them all. We must prepare ourselves for these types of individuals who are out to exploit you for their own self-interests.
I guarantee if some of these artists would learn chess they would not have taken these 360 deals that leave them broke and destitute. Learning how to become a tactical and strategic thinker is critical not only in the music business, but in life in general. It will also help improve your mind.
Tip #2: Read 1 Book A Month
Turning off the bs (TV, news, ect.) and picking up a book helped me in more ways than one. We live in a matrix and a fast food culture of instant gratification and hatred. The main thing we can do to start programming ourselves for success in the music business is to start reading success materials.
We are not talking about cheap novels or Harry Potter here. We are talking about books that will help you grow as an individual, books that a giving out game by the pound.
Some of my favorites are The Art Of War, The Prince, 48 Laws of Power, The Richest Man in Babylon, Think and Grow Rich. Theres actually too many on here to count!
Try setting a goal of expanding your mind and reading at least one book a month. That means 12 books a year, you will have grown so much in that time frame that you will be thinking and behaving in a way that benefits you and your goals in this music game.
As well as improving your vocabulary. Which leads me to my next tip…
Tip #3: Read The Dictionary
When I was in grade school every morning, first thing, we would have to learn 5 new words. I got into the habit of just reading the dictionary and learning new words. Now the benefit here should be obvious to you. The bigger your vocabulary the better your bars will be. Jay Z even said he used to do this.
You as a rapper your job is to be a speaker, and to be a great speaker you must have mastered the language you speak.
Once you learn some new words you will be able to drop some insane bars because you have more range of possibilities and rhyming words.
Set a goal of learning 5 new words every day and try using them in your everyday talk as well as your music.
Tip #4: Record Tracks Everyday
I can’t even begin to describe how critical this one is for your success. You should be recording tracks everyday and practicing and mastering your craft of rapping.
If you say you want a career in this game then this should be no problem because you love what you do. Don’t give me no free time because I will be constantly bangin out new beats. Why? Because of love to thats why.
By practicing everyday and recording everyday you take steps to improve your bars, improve your flow, improve your delivery, improve your breathing control. This is something you can do right now to start becoming a better rapper and a better emcee.
If your ready to take that plunge go ahead and down below this post is a beat store you can buy beats from and start mastering your craft right now.
So get up, buy a beat, write some bars, and record some tracks. Practice makes perfect!
