Buying/Selling Features: A New Income Stream
If you followed We Got Beats long enough you will know how much we love multiple sources of income. Remember the old saying, “Don’t put all your eggs in one basket”? The same holds true with your finances, especially if you are trying to fulfill your dream as a successful rapper.
As an artist, in todays economy, you must think of new and innovative ways to use the technology that is out here to create more than one income stream from your music.
Gone are the days of major platinum album sales, today is the day of the 360-deal and the information/ digital age. So we must adapt to the changing world.
Now if you seen our other posts you will notice how much we believe you should get your songs on Tunecore (where you can earn download and streaming revenue for a very small investment). You also have shows, merchandise, and a lot of other opportunities out there to build your multiple sources of income. Today we will be focused on one of those…
Selling Your Features: To Producers
This is a new and innovative way for you rappers out there to start making some extra bread from a simple, catchy hook.
Music Producers Online usually offer beats with hooks for sale, you may have purchased beats or leased beats like these before. But did you know that you can get in on that action as well?
First, you need to be a talented rapper of course. Secondly, you need great songwriting and lyrical skills. If not team up with someone who can write better than you and you both split the profits down the middle as a team. Thirdly, you need to find a music producer online or offline, that sells his or her beats!
Once you have all those things you need to get in contact with the producer to see if they are down to work. Some may already have their own go-to people. That’s fine, stay in contact with them and follow up. They may need a new sound (ie. YOUR sound) for a specific job.
Trust me if you are talented, you will have some quality producers to work with.
Selling Your Features: To Rappers and Singers
Now this site is fairly new, and because I am a producer I haven’t done any business on this site. So fair warning, whatever you do is your business. This is just friendly advice at the end of the day.
But I will warn you if you DO NOT take action then there will never be any reward for the risk you took. I say at least get an account and explore a bit, maybe even network.
Who knows you may like some of the stuff on there and decide to buy someone elses feature and grow and build with them!
BONUS: Split Sheets
If you are planning on doing this or not its always a great idea to create split sheets for every track you make. These split sheets will show who participated in creating the song and making sure everyone is taken care of legally and fairly.
